5 DIY Practice Commands while Walking your dog!

Learning is better when it’s fun!

Here are 5 commands you can practice while on a walk. They are easy to follow through and gives you a reason to reward your dog. Routine & Consistency makes learning fun and easier for you and your dog.

  1. “COME”

Before you begin your walk, you need to put on your dog’s leash. That is a perfect time to practice “COME”. Want to teach your dog to “COME”, here is a quick tutorial “COME Command” to do so.

  2. “SIT”

This is great to practice at stop lights and street corners. As you approach every light and street corner have your dog “SIT”, then you can reward them and continue the walk. “SIT Command” is easy to teach, here’s how!

  3. “STAY”

Teaching your dog to “STAY” is an important command to learn. Sometimes dogs are not aware of all the danger around, from cars & trains to bikes & scooters. Just having them learn “STAY” can be beneficial if there’s ever an emergency. Learn how to teach your dog the “STAY Command” here.

  4. “LAY DOWN”

This is usually one of the first commands a dog learns. It is a great idea to practice commands that your dog may already know. This helps to build their -confidence. Learn how to teach your dog the “LAY DOWN Command” here.

  5. “PAW”

This command is great for greeting! Dogs sometimes jump on people to greet them or if they are excited. This is a great alternative. You can teach your dog the “PAW” Command and take care of this problem once and for all.

Now that you know what to do… Let’s make the next walk more fun than ever before! Take treats along with you (or you can praise your dog for a job well done)! Pay attention to your energy and how you are feeling. A calm and relaxed feeling is the best way to pursue this! Be aware and enjoy the time you have together!

4 Ways to keep your dog busy!

Do you feel bad for leaving your dog alone sometimes? Does your pet seem bored or sleeps all day long? Here are 4 easy ways to keep your dog busy whether you’re around or not! Here goes!

  1. Give your dog a KONG!
Kong’s are great for dogs to play with. You can fill it with any treat your pet likes (even their kibble). Then you seal it with peanut butter, yogurt, or even cheese. Then freeze it until your pet is ready. The fact that it is frozen will keep your dog busy for a while.
  2. Give your dog a Doggy Puzzles!
Puzzles are great for dogs! They come in different shapes, colors and intensity levels. Find the right type of puzzle for your dog and hid treats underneath. This will motivate your dog to keep trying until they retrieve the prize which is the hidden treat. Moving the pieces takes some time so it will keep your dog busy for a little while.
  3. Letting them sit by the window or door!
Some dogs find great joy in “people watching”. They love to sit around watching the world go by. They spend hours in the same spot as cars drive by, people walk by and watching the squirrels in the trees. This can be a great pastime for many pets. *Be careful though, sometimes the stimulation may cause your pet to become extremely hyper.
  4. Get your dog a friend!
Some dogs love dogs! Playing with another dog keeps them busy and happy! Getting another dog could solve this problem easily. If getting another dog is not an option, maybe play dates with a neighbor’s dog or daytime walks with a dog walker should help. They will get to socialize and burn energy at the same time.

There it is! 4 simple ways to keep your pet busy! Try going down the list and seeing if any of these makes your dog happy.

Dog Allergies 101

Does your dog have allergies? All dogs can have allergies. Some breeds are more likely to suffer from allergies than others. These breeds include: Terriers, Setters, Retrievers, and flat-faced breeds such as Pugs, Bulldogs, poodle mix breeds and Boston terriers. What are the symptoms ? Here are a list of Symptoms :

  • Itchy, red, moist or scabbed skin
  • Increased scratching
  • Itchy, runny eyes
  • Itchy back or base of tail (most commonly flea allergy)
  • Itchy ears and ear infections
  • Sneezing
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Snoring caused by an inflamed throat
  • Paw chewing/swollen paws
  • Constant licking
What causes the allergic reaction?

Many things can cause an allergic reaction. Each dog is different and can have different triggers. Here are some common things that can cause a reaction.

  • Tree, grass and weed pollens
  • Mold spores
  • Dust and house dust mites
  • Dander
  • Feathers
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Food ingredients (e.g. beef, chicken, pork, corn, wheat or soy)
  • Prescription drugs
  • Fleas and flea-control products (Only a few flea bites can trigger intense itchiness for two to three weeks!)
  • Perfumes
  • Cleaning products
  • Fabrics
  • Insecticidal shampoo
  • Rubber and plastic materials
What can you do to help with pet allergies?
  • Clean your pup’s paws after going outside. If need be, quickly go over them with a baby wipe to remove all the extra pollen that may be in their fur/hair or on their paws.
  • Contact your vet. Your pet may need prescription meds to help them deal with the reaction caused by their allergies.
  • Clean your pet’s area regularly. This will help to minimize the spreading of what may cause their reaction. Oatmeal Bathes may also help to relieve the discomfort.
  • Pay close attention to when your pet seems to have a reaction. It may not be caused by what you think.
  • Over the counter meds have been prescribed for dogs before. Antihistamines such as Benadryl, Zyrtec and Claritin have been used in small dosage to aid with seasonal allergies. Contact your vet first.

Ex. Do they sneeze or itch after you spray cologne or perfume? Do they itch after you clean the floors? Are they ALWAYS licking their paws?

I think I want a sibling! Hear me out… A pet’s Story!

Hey Everyone! My name is Hendrix and I am a handsome 3-year-old Shih-Tzu pup! I have a great life I must admit. I have an awesome dad who I take great care of! We hang out at parks all the time and he loves to go hiking with me. I try to do as much as I can with him because he seems to enjoy our time together, which I must say I love as well. We watch TV together, go on walks together, play fetch and chase (those are my favorites), even eat together in the kitchen. It’s all great over here! So then, why would I want a sibling right?

Well, here’s the thing. When dad goes to “work” I’m all alone. Sometimes he hangs out with his friends which is cool! I love that I’m not his only friend. I just want someone to hang out with too, someone other than dad. When he’s off doing humans things then I will have another dog around. I understand that he needs friends and to have a life, but how do I convince him to get me a sibling? I have a life too you know! Or at least, that’s what I’m trying to work on now. Maybe I can ask my best friend Walter when I pick him up later. I see Walter everyday when our human friend Stacy comes to get us. She picks me up after dad leaves and then we pick up Walter. We have lots of fun on our walks! I love hanging out with Happy Panters and the Panter pets, but it always ends after a while. So again, ahem…… I think I want a sibling!

What would be some good points to tell dad? He’s a tough negotiator!  Let me practice now. “Dad! I think I want a sibling. Before you say no, here’s why. I want a sibling because sometimes I get lonely when you’re away. I play with Walter and Stacy but what I really want is someone here with me all the time. I know I’ve been a great dog and I don’t get in too much trouble, so I will take full responsibility of my new sibling and teach them everything I know. I think I did a great job with you! (if I must say so myself, ha-ha) so it can’t be too hard. I even did some research! There are many shelters here in New York that we can visit so I can find the perfect match. They have a variety of dogs with great temperaments who just need a good home and a family to love them. We can do that dad, I know we can! Let’s help a dog in a bad situation and at the same time GET ME A SSSSIBLING! WOOHOOO!”  The End!

Dad has to say yes to that! I mean how can he say no to that? We’re doing something great here right? Killing two birds with one stone? (As the humans would say!) Taking a rescue out of the shelter and (sings) GETTING ME A SIBLING YEAH! So, I have the list of shelters here in New York for us to visit! I also have a list of what we would need to do to be ready to adopt. Aaahhh I said it, ADOPT. ADOPT, ADOPT, ADOPT! I want to ADOPT a new sibling. When dad comes home, I will ask him. No! I will convince him that this is the best thing to do for both of us! Stay Tuned to see how it goes!

ADOPT A RESCUE DOG!

Do you have any suggestions or tips for me? The more info I have the better!

My Holiday Wish!

“What do you want for Christmas?” Not that I can answer, but that’s the question that I’ve been asked for a few weeks now. My humans are trying to figure out what I would want. They took me to the pet store and I saw Toys… lots of toys! Toys that I could chew on, toys that made noise, toys that I could chase, even toys that were bigger than me. We walked around a bit more and I saw lots of clothes! If you know me, you know I LOVE clothes! Dad normally buys me cool jerseys and shirts, while mom usually buys me cute stuff like pea coats and sweaters. I love the attention I receive as we take our walks. Other humans want to say “hi” and to pet me, while dogs like to sniff me. I love my wardrobe! Then we went to the treats section! Oh I almost lost my mind, I started pulling dad towards my favorite treat and sat right in front of it. He knows what that means! Of course, we got treats, wooohooo! There was one more section that mom wanted to look at… the kittens, oh boy here we go.

Needless to say, “I was not a fan”. I stood off to the side as mom doted over them, secretly hoping she would not bring one home. I enjoyed being an only child but that was about to change. As the animal god would have it …we got a kitten that day. I’m still wondering what I did to deserve this, you can probably tell “I was not happy about this.” We ended up buying a lot more stuff that day. None of it was for me though. We all went home as a new family and they set up her stuff right next to mine. Her bed was next to mine, her food was next to mine, she even had a basket with her name on it for her toys and stuff. She didn’t use her stuff though, she used mine. She used my bed, my food bowl, my water bowl, even my toys. Her favorite toy of all was “ME”. I hated it, she would swat at my face and try to bite my tail. She would curl up in my bed with me or on me preferably. She would eat my kibble with me and would even wait around so she could follow me. Everywhere I went she was there!

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but…. I LOVE HER!! She has become my best friend. We play fight all day long. She jumps all over me and does these sneak attacks as I walk by, which the humans find hilarious. There was that one time she climbed up dad’s leg with her claws. He screamed so loud as he jumped up out the couch, now that was hilarious!  She sleeps under my paw and close to my heart, just the way I like it. I eat a little of her kibble and then she follows suite. As her big brother it’s my job to make sure that she’s eating all her meals and growing healthy. I think mom made a great choice with bringing her home. I wasn’t too happy at first but now I can’t imagine it being any different.

I know what I want for Christmas! My sister came from a group called “Little Wanderers”. I found out that my sister and her kitten siblings were rescued off New York City streets.  She’s so strong, I wouldn’t know what to do. They were taken to the vet and put in foster homes. Mom says “Little Wanderers goal is to find them permanent homes”. Before that happens, they need trap and rescue the felines (heard mom say that word) and get them to a vet to make sure everything is okay. Many times they need to be spayed/neutered, de wormed, or even have surgeries to fix any problems before you adopt them. I know it costs a lot of money because my mom says “girls are expensive” and my sister has a ton of stuff. I can’t even imagine if she needed more stuff what we would do.  Little Wanderers cover these expenses through donations and sometimes even foster parents try to help as much as they can. This is an all volunteer based network of people, so I DECIDED I WANT TO HELP BUT I NEED YOUR HELP! My sister and I have a great home with amazing humans but many pets out there don’t even have a home. Let’s do our part in making the world a better place!  Here is there info below! Every bit helps!

Little Wanderers

Did you Know?

On Average it takes $250.00 to help one feline! This is if they DON’T need major surgery!
Our Goal: Raise $1,000 (help 4 felines)
Here’s how we can help them:

  • Little Wanderers accept donations on their website!
  • Foster Parents have Pet Wish Lists on Amazon!
    • Choose a foster parent from their site.
    • Order supplies and have it shipped to them!
    • Happy Panters will be working with foster mom: Lourdes Aviles!
  • Sponsor a Pet today!
    • Cover the felines expenses & needs financially while they are with “Little Wanderers”.
    • This is great for those who want to help but don’t have the time to dedicate to fostering!

I am grateful for you!

Humans call this the season “The Holiday Season” whatever that means. They have lots of weird days that they do special things on and wear special clothes. Ive noticed they been decorating the house which gives it this warm, comfy feeling. The leaves on the trees are changing colors and falling all over the ground, which is perfect for chasing!! Sometimes my human gets mad when i “drag” her around with me, but I can’t help but to chase those leaves. I can hear them say “chase me, chase me!” So i do! So that must mean its Fall!! Why do they even call it Fall… mmmmm

Lately I have been hearing her ask other humans “what are they thankful for?” I never thought about it. Truth is, I am so thankful for my human. She feeds me, she lets me sleep with her, she takes me on walks and places to eat food. She gives me lots of hugs and kisses. She bought my bed, food bowl, water bowl, toys, treats, clothes…. whoa! I never realized just how much she does for me. I have to thank her!! But how!

Maybe I will wait for her at the door and give her kisses when she comes home! How about i get in bed and warm up her spot for her? What if I feed myself dinner tonight so she wont have to? Maybe i can take out the garbage? Nah, i don’t even know how to open the door and i will probably just make a mess. Mmmmm, i need to show my human I’m grateful for her but how?

The things with us pets’ is we show LOVE as a form of gratitude. We pay close attention to our humans and often know what mood their in. We get excited when they’re excited and sad when they’re sad. We love spending time with them and giving them our undivided attention. Our humans take care of us and we only hope we show them how much we appreciate all they do for us!!

Thank you to all the humans, that go above and beyond for us! We appreciate you!

Back in Routine

Can you believe that it’s already September? The ninth month of the year, beginning of the 3rd season of the year, end of Summer & warm weather.

Are you ready for early mornings meetings and late night paperwork? Getting homework done and dinner ready, while loading the laundry and vacuuming up messes. Oh, can’t forget the dog! Some of us live for routines and knowing what to expect, while some of us find it mundane & boring… which one are you? I must admit there’s a little comfort in knowing what to expect, what’s coming up next or the fact that your mornings are the pretty much same. It’s routine!

What if i told you that dogs LOVE routines! They live for routines! They like to know what’s happening and when. You may already follow a routine with your pets and I bet they are aware of what’s happening and what’s to come. Almost like they can read your mind, hahaha. Don’t worry, I don’t think they can. You may subconsciously and not even realize little details that your pet may pick up. Dogs especially are very keen to body language, especially your hands & face.Your dog watches you for social cues, whether its time for a walk, when you are getting food or even what turn to make while on the walk. They have spent hours upon hours studying your every move. They often know what mood you are in and will try to comfort you or avoid you. Not all dogs may be in tuned to everything their parents may do, but many dogs have an idea and read body language very well. Especially that of their owners.

Does your dog ever get upset if you start to get dressed? Mine, starts to pay attention because she expects to go wherever we go. Snuggles will first watch as we get dressed, then she will make her way to the leaving room. If she hears keys or sees us put on shoes, she gets excited and stays on our heels because she refuses to be left behind. She will even attempt to run out the door before you just to avoid it, haha. My dog also knows where the vet office & groomers are.

She will begin to shake as if shes freezing cold, while everyone oohh’s and aaaahhhs over her. Snuggles also knows when it’s bed time (whether we are ready for bed or not, is another question). She stands at the bedroom door and stares into the living room, if we do not acknowledge her she will bark ONCE to let us know she’s
waiting. If we do not oblige she waits patiently for about …. 2 minutes before she releases another bark. It is then our job to first put her on the bed, then get into bed because she is ready to lay down (that my be a routine, she taught us).

Dogs love routines! It helps them to feel calm and balanced because they have an idea of what to expect. Just like humans it provides a sense of calm, knowing where your home is, your bed, your hang out spots. Their routines provide that for them. If your pet seems uneasy maybe try establishing a routine for your pet. This should help them calm down a bit as repetition provides a sense of comfortability. On the other hand, if your routine is causing anxiety (i.e. your pet has separation anxiety, so watching you gets dressed puts them in a frenzy). This could also be a problem for your pet. Our pets are nonverbal, unless you have a talking parrot. They try to communicate the best they can but it is up to us to take the extra steps to ensure that our pets are safe & happy.

“Ever feel guilty when you go on vacation without your pets? “

Vacations should feel like an escape from it all right? So why do we feel so guilty going away without our pets? Truth is you consider them apart of the family and want to treat them that way. The world needs to catch up right!

Fortunately, we thought about that. This is why we do what we do! As pet parents ourselves we understand the importance of taking care of family. Parents deserve to get away, I mean that’s what babysitters are for right? So if your human kids have a babysitter, it would only be right to have a petsitter as well. The difference is your pets are having way more fun than you could ever imagine. They asked us not to tell you so you wouldn’t feel bad about not being able to stay at Happy Panters with them. Ssssshhh, don’t tell them we told you.

Here at Happy Panters we honestly do it because we care! Having a dog and two cats of our own, they are definitely family and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We wanted to extend that Safety yet fun atmosphere and option to other pet parents who may need a little help with their “pet children.” A community of people who truly love and value the lives of pets. So next time you plan a vacation don’t feel guilty! Feel happy because EVERYONE  is going on vacation.
